By Sampson Adedeji

The hope of United State, Mexico and Canada to be the first countries that will stage 48-teams format of the World Cup has being dashed has world football governing body has brought it forward to 2022 in Qatar.

There have been lots of discussions on the number of teams taking part in the biggest football showpiece with FIFA president Gianni Infantino campaigning vigorously for the expansion.

After so much discussion, the decision to stage the event in 2022 was finally agreed in the United State where FIFA is presently having a symposium.

FIFA Council on Friday okays to explore expanding 2022 World Cup to 48 teams.

The countries participating in the tournament was increased to 32 countries in France 1998 after 24 countries for the first time participated at USA 1994.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have taken part in all FIFA World Cup since 1994 except 2006 in Germany.

The final decision on the competition will come in June 2019 as they also consider having another country as co-host.
