Beach Volleyball: Nigeria beat Niger Republic 2-0 to book world cup ticket

Abuja, April 25, 2019 (NAN)  Team Nigeria on Thursday in Abuja,  defeated Team Niger Republic  2-0 in the female category in the fourth  quarter final match to  secure a ticket for the  World Cup in Germany.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the championships which begun on Sunday at the Jabi Lake would end on April 28.

NAN also reports that the tournament is being hosted by the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF) in conjunction with the Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB).

 

Tochukwu Nnoruga and Fransica Ikhiede of Team Nigeria defeated Rakatou Seydou and Roukaya Garba of Niger Republic 21-18, 21-16.

 

Samuel  Onikeku, Sport Secretary General, Nigeria Custom Service said he was happy that the team made the country proud in the tournament.

“I’m happy that my players are representing Nigeria in this competition and they were able to secure a ticket for the country.

 

“We have been preparing our girls for years and this is the result of the preparation. The team just came from indoor championship which is a different ball game.

 

“They won the Zone three indoor championship and I am happy that we are representing the nation in beach volleyball, “he said.

 

The Niger Republic coach, Djafarou Maima, on his part said he would concentrate on the ranking in their next match.

 

“My players fought well even though they lost the quarter finals against Nigeria. They have work hard to feature in the quarter finals match.

 

“We need to work more so that we will correct our ranking match on Friday.

 

“I will encouraged my players to be focused in their next match so that we will improve in our ranking, “he said

 

NAN reports that in the first quarter final Rwanda beat Botswana 21-9, 21- 10 to end the game at 2-0.

 

In the second quarter final match, Egypt beat Morocco 14-21, 21-14, 15-13 to end the game 2-1.

 

NAN also reports that a total of 21 countries are participating in the 2019 African Nations Beach Volleyball Senior Men and Women Championships.(NAN)
