Capital City Doves defeat Beautiful Tour Angels 2-1 in FCT Women’s FA Cup

Capital City Doves recorded a hard-fought 2-1 victory over a resilient 10-woman Beautiful Tour Angels in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Women’s FA Cup at the Area 3 playing ground in Abuja on Thursday.

City Doves made their intention known as early as in the eighth minute when Chichi Igbo tapped in a low cross after Beautiful Tour Angels’ goalkeeper had parried an initial shot to make it 1-0.

However against the run of play, Beautiful Tour Angels levelled things up in the 16th minute through Christabel Ezekiel’s long-range free kick, although City Doves’ goalkeeper was culpable for mistiming her jump.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the match stayed 1-1 at the end of the first half despite City Doves dominating the game in every department.

The second half started as the first ended, with City Doves creating many chances but failing to convert them as their players were wasteful in front of goal.

They did restore their lead in the 76th minute when, following a fine team move, Onyinye Opara beat her marker to send in City Doves’ second goal.

The game turned on its head a little later when Tour Angels’ defender, Ezekiel, was shown a second yellow card and sent off for angrily pulling off the corner flag after she a poor corner kick she took.

But City Doves failed to make their one-woman advantage count, as they were let down by their final balls in front of goal.

Confined to defending for the rest of the game, there were times when enterprising and resilient Tour Angels looked like getting an equalizer but for their collective fatigue.

The game ended 2-1 in favour of City Doves.

Head coach of the victors, Adanna Nwaneri, told NAN after the match that her team got the job done against all odds.

“I thank God that we won. A victory is a victory and against all odds we did the job expected of us. We came with a game plan and stuck to it even when we were frustrated,” she said.

Nwaneri however acknowledged that her team was wasteful in front of goal and could have been punished.

“We missed too many goals. It is an area we need to work on in our next match. There were times I panicked in the game; we could have been punished,” she said.

On his part, Emmanuel Edet, coach of Beautiful Tour Angels, was full of praise for his players.

“They gave a good account of themselves. We lost the game but not without a fight. As you can see, these girls are young and will go places. It can only get better,” he said.

The final of the FCT Women’s FA Cup will be played on Sunday at the same venue.
