Edo 2020: Weightlifting, Canoeing Events Get Highest Medals

The total number of medals expected to be won at the 2020 National Sports Festival starting March 22 in Edo State has been revealed.

In the analysis of the medals to be awarded in each sport, which was made available to our correspondent, a total of 2,117 medals are expected to be won by athletes representing the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory at Edo 2020.

According to punchng.com, the breakdown shows athletes would slug it out for 623 gold and 623 silver medals each, while a total of 871 bronze medals would be up for grabs.

Weightlifting accounts for the highest number of gold medals to be won at the sports festival, with the event promising 180 medals, comprising 60 gold, silver and bronze medals each.

Next is canoeing, which boasts of a total of 144 medals, comprising 48 gold, silver and bronze medals.

Athletics comes third on the medals table with 44 gold, silver and bronze medals each, giving a total of 132 medals.

Swimming is fourth on the gold medal haul, with 42 gold, silver and bronze medals each up for grabs, a total of 126 medals.

Kungfu, though having more medal prospects than canoeing and athletics and swimming – 156 medals in total – only has 39 gold and silver medals up for grabs. The event however has 78 bronze medals to be won due to the fact that third and fourth place winners would go home with the bronze medal.

Events with the least gold medals to be won are basketball, beach volleyball, cricket, deaf table tennis, football, handball, hockey and volleyball.

They all have two gold, silver and bronze medals each to be won in the male and female team events respectively.

Despite amassing the highest amount of gold medals on display, weightlifting only has a total of 20 athletes – 10 men and women each – expected across states for the festival.

Athletics has the highest number of athletes expected for the festival, with 31 male and female athletes expected to feature in different track and field events.
