In celebration of the first ever IHF International Handball Week, the Handball Federation of Nigeria(HFN) will hold an online international conference on the development of Handball in Nigeria.

Major speakers include Dr. Hesham Nasr who is the President of Egypt’s Handball Federation and Mr. Pedro Godinho who is the President of the Angola Handball Federation as well as doubles as the second Vice President of the Confederation of Africa Handball (CAHB).

Another key speaker for the conference is Dr. Lanre Glover who is an accomplished technocrat with a track record of achievements in sports.

He was the former President of HFN wherein he helped to reposition handball in the grassroot and former Vice President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC).

He also served in the Confederation of Africa Handball (CAHB) as the Chairman of the governing body’s Medical Commission between 1992 and 2000 and he was also the former 1st Vice President of CAHB as well as serving in several capacity in diverse sports federation and association in the continent.

Another speaker is Dr. Sule Bello, who is the coordinator, National Institute For Sports (NIS)

President of Handball Federation of Nigeria Mr. Sam Ocheho, who is the host, says this conference will set the path for further growth in the development of handball in Nigeria as the federation is willing to learn from the success stories of other countries.

For him, the International Handball Week is a welcome development to celebrate the ideals of handball in the development of every society in the world.

The International Handball Week was introduced at the 2019 Ordinary Congress of the International Handball Federation (IHF) to celebrate the world handball governing body’s founding date which is July 12th and every affiliate national federation were encouraged to organise special handball activities in their countries, such as matches, courses and so on with support from IHF.

But with the corona virus pandemic putting a halt to sporting activities globally including handball, the IHF intends to go ahead with the celebration of the International Handball Week using handball as a unifying tool to bring people together at this difficult time.

Thus, the need to organise activities in celebration for the week long celebration and HFN have taken the first step as the conference will be held virtually on zoom starting from July 13th.
