CAF President Gives More Insight On African Nation League Ahead Of 2029 Edition

The President of the Confederation of African Football has provided further clarification on the proposed African Nation League scheduled to debut in 2029, underscoring the competition’s ambition to redefine continental football, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Speaking during a media briefing, the CAF boss revealed that all 54 African national teams will participate in the tournament, describing the concept as a landmark initiative designed to showcase elite African talent and intensify regional rivalries across the continent.

“We will have 54 African countries participate. Imagine fixtures such as Kenya versus Tanzania, Ghana against Nigeria, Egypt versus Morocco, and Ivory Coast facing Cameroon,” he stated, highlighting the potential blockbuster encounters expected from the competition.

According to the CAF president, the tournament will be hosted in a single country to ensure streamlined logistics and a festival-style atmosphere capable of attracting Africa’s best players and global attention.

 “It will be staged in one country. All the best players will come to play. It will be exciting, and it will take place during the FIFA international window,” he added.

He further explained that the competition will adopt a zonal structure in its initial phase, with each region hosting its own matches before progressing to a final playoff stage.

 “It will be zonal-based. For example, Nigeria will host all West African games. All zonal winners will meet to fight for the ultimate prize, and a draw will be conducted for the final stage,” he concluded.

The African Nations League is expected to become a major addition to Africa’s football calendar, potentially offering fans high-profile matchups while strengthening regional competition and continental unity through sport.
