 "I’m Not After Yekini’s Goal-scoring Record" – Osimhen

Victor Osimhen has played down talks of breaking Rashidi Yekini’s long-standing goal record for Nigeria, insisting that his sole focus at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations is winning a major trophy with the Super Eagles, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Galatasaray striker moved closer to Yekini’s all-time Super Eagles goal tally after scoring in Nigeria’s 2-0 quarter-final victory over Algeria on Saturday. 

Osimhen now needs just three more goals to draw level with the late Nigerian legend, who remains the country’s highest goalscorer.

Despite the growing attention around the milestone, Osimhen was quick to dismiss any personal ambition linked to the record, describing Yekini as Nigeria’s greatest-ever striker.

“Not at all. It doesn’t matter if I equal the record or surpass it,” Osimhen said. 

“Yekini is the best striker Nigeria has ever produced. I just want to win something for my country.”

The 25-year-old forward added that collective success means more to him than individual accolades, stressing that the current Super Eagles squad is united in its pursuit of continental glory

“I’m happy that, together with my teammates, I’m on that path,” he concluded.

Osimhen’s goal against Algeria further underlined his importance to Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 campaign, as the Super Eagles continue their push for a fourth continental title.
