‘It Hurts’ – Osimhen Reflects on Super Eagles’ World Cup Failure

Nigeria international Victor Osimhen has expressed his disappointment over the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, admitting that the reality of missing football’s biggest tournament has been difficult to accept, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Super Eagles were unable to secure qualification from a group that included South Africa and Benin Republic, ending their hopes of reaching the tournament scheduled to be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Nigeria was handed a second chance through the playoff route. However, after overcoming Gabon, the team’s hopes were dashed following a penalty shootout defeat to DR Congo.

As preparations intensify for the global showpiece, which will feature more than 1,200 players from around the world, the disappointment of Nigeria’s absence continues to weigh heavily on the country's players, particularly Osimhen.

According to comments attributed to the Galatasaray striker on social media, the former Napoli forward acknowledged the pain of missing a second consecutive World Cup and revealed that many of his national team teammates share the same feeling.

“I feel bad not playing at the World Cup. This is the second time in a row. I was talking with the other guys and they feel the same way, but we move,” Osimhen was quoted as saying.

The 27-year-old remains one of Nigeria’s most influential players and will now turn his focus to helping the Super Eagles rebuild ahead of future international competitions.
