Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen has opened up about the defining moment that set him on the path to professional football, describing how a brief trial opportunity altered the course of his life, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

In a personal account published by The Players' Tribune, the Super Eagles forward recounted the challenges he faced growing up and the resilience that propelled him to the summit of the sport.

Currently starring for Galatasaray, where he has quickly established himself as a key figure since arriving last summer, Osimhen reflected on the uncertainty and setbacks that marked his early years.

He revealed that, with the help of a local agent, he once embarked on a nine-hour journey to Abuja for a trial that drew nearly 900 aspiring young players. On the first day, he did not make it onto the pitch. The following day, however, a coach called him forward.

“You have 15 minutes,” Osimhen recalled being told.

Faced with limited time to impress, he relied on relentless effort. “I knew that the only way to impress them was to run,” he wrote, adding that he scored twice during his brief appearance.

Despite his performance, his name was initially omitted from the selected list. As he began to leave in disappointment, he heard shouts calling him back. The team doctor, having remembered his goals, pointed him out to the coaching staff.

“Two fingers saved me,” Osimhen wrote, crediting that intervention as the turning point in his career.

The opportunity led to his inclusion in Nigeria’s squad for the FIFA U-17 World Cup, where he emerged as the tournament’s top scorer with 10 goals in seven matches, guiding the country to the title and announcing himself on the global stage.

His exploits attracted interest from Europe, culminating in a move to VfL Wolfsburg. However, his time in Germany proved challenging, and illness — including a bout of malaria — disrupted his progress and nearly derailed a subsequent loan switch.

Osimhen eventually rediscovered his form at Royal Charleroi SC, earning a transfer to Lille OSC before securing a high-profile move to SSC Napoli in 2020.

In Italy, he cemented his status as one of Europe’s elite forwards, playing a decisive role in delivering Napoli’s first Serie A title in 33 years and etching his name into the club’s history.

From a 15-minute trial in Abuja to lifting major honours in Europe, Osimhen’s journey stands as a testament to perseverance, faith and the transformative power of opportunity.
