Rena Wakama Honoured By Alma Mater, Western Carolina University

Head coach of Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, Rena Wakama, has been honoured by her alma mater, Western Carolina University, in recognition of her outstanding achievements and contribution to the sport, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Wakama, who made history last year as the first female coach to lead Nigeria to an AfroBasket Women’s title, received the prestigious award during a special ceremony held at the university campus in Cullowhee, North Carolina.

The honour celebrates her rapid rise in coaching and her remarkable leadership with D’Tigress, who have dominated African basketball under her guidance. Since taking charge, Wakama has steered Nigeria to back-to-back victories on the continental stage and strengthened the team’s global competitiveness.

Speaking at the event, Wakama expressed gratitude to the institution for shaping her athletic and coaching journey.

“I’m deeply honoured to be recognized by Western Carolina University. This is a place that contributed significantly to who I am today, both as an athlete and as a coach. I’m grateful for the support and inspired to continue pushing the boundaries,” she said.

The award further highlights Wakama’s growing influence as one of Africa’s most successful young coaches, and a role model in women’s sports.

D’Tigress are currently preparing for upcoming international engagements as they build on their recent success.
