"We Are Focused On Picking The World Cup Ticket In Mexico" - DR Congo Coach Tells FIFA

Head coach of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sébastien Desabre, has expressed strong confidence in his team’s readiness as they approach a decisive playoff for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In an interview published by FIFA, the French tactician said his squad remains focused and highly motivated to secure qualification when they compete in the intercontinental playoff scheduled for 31 March in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The Congolese national team, known as the Leopards, are aiming to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1974, when the country—then called Zaire—made its only appearance but exited at the group stage without scoring.

Desabre attributed his team’s progress in the qualifiers to collective resilience and unity, emphasizing the importance of their shared journey.

“We’re really fired up and still on course to meet our main objective,” he said. “This upcoming final will be our 13th match in the campaign. It has been a long road, and we’ve had to fight through every stage.”

The Leopards booked their place in the playoff after defeating Nigeria’s Super Eagles 4–3 on penalties following a 1–1 draw in regulation time during the CAF playoff round in Morocco.

The result was later contested by Nigeria, who filed a complaint with FIFA alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players. While the protest sparked speculation about a possible reversal, FIFA has yet to issue a public ruling and has continued preparations for the playoff tournament.

Reflecting on his team’s journey, Desabre declined to single out any particular moment as decisive, instead highlighting the group’s overall development.

“It’s about everything we’ve experienced together—the highs and the lows,” he said. “Those moments have strengthened the team and brought us to where we are today.”

He also pointed to defensive solidity as a key factor, noting that his side has conceded just one goal in their last four matches. According to the coach, strong team cohesion and commitment to a common goal have been instrumental.

“The players share a strong bond on and off the pitch. Everyone is working in the same direction,” he added.

In Guadalajara, DR Congo will face either the Jamaica national team or New Caledonia for a place at the 2026 World Cup.

Desabre acknowledged the magnitude of the occasion but urged his players to remain composed.

“We all dream of playing at the World Cup, but we must not let emotions take over,” he said. “What matters is delivering on the day and making the nation proud.”

A victory would secure DR Congo’s return to football’s biggest stage after a 52-year absence.
