"We Remember Keshi" - Fans Pour Condolence Wishes In Remembrance Of Ex-Eagles Captain, Coach

Social media was thrown into posthumous mode by Nigerian fans and the international world today, in remembrance of former player and coach - the late Stephen Keshi, who died on the 7th of June, 2016. 

This year marks seven years since the passing of an icon who was revered as one of only two Africans to have won the Africa Cup of Nations title as a player in 1994, and as coach in 2013 while also bagging the CAF Coach of the Year that year. 

One of his favorite quotes as a coach was; “People don't have to believe in you for you to succeed. Just work hard, when you succeed, they will believe. Every game is very difficult, no game is easy” - Stephen Keshi.

Another was; "Our audacity to rise from our loses, makes Nigeria the number one footballing nation in Africa". 

Fans joined the Nigeria Football Federation on social media to pour out their condolences in the wake of Keshi's remembrance by adopting the hashtag #WeRememberKeshi.

As a player, Keshi, who hailed from Benin City positioned as a defender and earned 60 caps for the Nigeria national team, making him the nation's second-most capped player at the time of his retirement in 1995.

He represented the country a year prior, at the 1994 FIFA World Cup and the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations, captaining the Super Eagles to victory in the latter. 

He also played club football in five national leagues - Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Belgium, France, and the USA, most notably Belgium, where he won the Belgian league championship with R.S.C. Anderlecht in 1991.

As a manager, Keshi also achieved national success with Togo, by qualifying the former for their only FIFA World Cup appearance in its history in 2006.
