‘You Must Be Better Than the Best’ – Chelle on New Players Breaking Into Super Eagles
By Niyi Busari
Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has highlighted the intense competition for places in the national team, insisting that players must consistently prove their quality to earn a spot in the squad, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Speaking in an interview, the Franco-Malian tactician said the depth of talent available across all positions has made selection increasingly competitive.
According to Chelle, players seeking opportunities in the team must outperform established internationals who are already excelling at the highest level.
"If you want to break into central defence, you have players like Calvin Bassey, Semi Ajayi, Igho Ogbu, Benjamin Frederick and Fernandez competing for places," Chelle said.
He also pointed to the quality available in the full-back positions, citing players such as Ola Aina, Bruno Onyemaechi and Zaidu Sanusi, alongside other emerging talents.
In midfield, Chelle singled out Alex Iwobi for praise, describing the Fulham star as "a magician" and one of the key figures in the squad.
The coach was equally complimentary of Nigeria's attacking options, reserving special praise for Victor Osimhen, whom he described as the best striker in the world.
"You have to be better than these players to break into the team," Chelle stated. "To be part of the Super Eagles, you must give everything — intensity, aggression and commitment. Every player must earn his place."
Chelle's remarks underline the growing strength and depth of the Super Eagles as the team continues preparations for upcoming international assignments.
