The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, is among the high-profile dignitaries expected at the League of African Ambassadors Fundraising Golf Tournament in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Enikanolaiye, a former career diplomat, is scheduled to attend the event as one of the special guests, alongside Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma and Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno.
Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, Ambassador Ben Okoyen, said the tournament is expected to draw more than 150 golfers, with overall participation projected at about 350 people.
The gathering will bring together members of the African diplomatic community, corporate executives, government officials, business leaders and representatives of various agencies.
Okoyen said the tournament would go beyond the sporting contest, providing an opportunity for participants to strengthen relationships, exchange ideas and engage in conversations on Africa's development.
“The aspect of interaction is more than the game. We expect far more than 150 persons. We are expecting in the neighbourhood of 350 or thereabouts,” Okoyen said.
He disclosed that preparations had been stepped up for a programme that will feature an opening ceremony, golf tournament, closing ceremony, fundraising and award dinners, alongside a cultural showcase highlighting the rich heritage of Akwa Ibom State.
According to Okoyen, participants are expected to arrive in Uyo on August 28, with the opening game scheduled for August 29 and the finals set for August 30.
“Business leaders, corporate bodies and government officials will take advantage of the platform golf is providing to interact with the diplomatic community,” he added.
Why Uyo?
The choice of the Ibom Golf Course as the venue has also received commendation from stakeholders in the sport.
Chairman of the FCT Golf Association, Akabom Enobong, described the facility as one of the finest golf resorts in West Africa, citing its serene environment and suitability for high-level sporting and business engagements.
Enobong said the resort offers an ideal setting for relaxation, strategic thinking and meaningful discussions away from the busy environments of Lagos and Abuja.
Okoyen stressed that the tournament is not solely a fundraising exercise, but part of a wider League of African Ambassadors initiative designed to promote solidarity, dialogue and collective efforts towards advancing the African cause.
The tournament remains open to golfers, sponsors and corporate partners, while trophies will be awarded to outstanding performers in various categories.
Participants will also have the opportunity to win return flight tickets to destinations including London, Barbados and Ghana, courtesy of participating airlines such as Ibom Air, Air Peace and Arik Air.
The organisers said the event is expected to combine sport, diplomacy, business networking and cultural exchange, further positioning Uyo as a destination for major international sporting and diplomatic gatherings.
