2004 WAFCON Winner, Godwin Izilien Dies At 81

2004 African Women's Cup of Nations winner and former coach if the Super Falcons, Godwin Izillien, has died.

The Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) winner in South Africa passed away on Wednesday at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) at the age of 81.

Until his demise, he coached several club sides in Nigeria, and was the coach of the then Mid-West team that played against Pele of Brazil in the unification Cup at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.

He was a former head coach of Bendel Insurance FC, trained in Germany as a football coach.

Late Izilein won a lot of laurels for Nigeria during his days as a coach. He was also head coach of Edo Queens FC. He also played for the then Green Eagles under Coach Alabi Aisien.

He won the prestigious African Women CAF Cup with the Super Falcons in South Africa years ago. It's reported that the Nigeria Football Federation owed him $12,000 since 2004 and has not been paid till his death.

He is survived by wife and children.
