The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the league which got underway on Oct. 10 at the Area 3 astroturf football pitch comprises of 25 clubs spread across five groups and is scheduled end in November. Odionye who spoke to NAN on the sidelines of the ongoing league said his team was not just in the competition to make up the numbers, adding that they were capable of winning the league in their first stinct. “This is our first time playing the national amateur league in the FCT and we are delighted to be part of it this year. “My idea of football has been to promote the game at the grassroots, encouraging the young ones and trying to push them to the next level. “This whole idea started about nine months ago and by the special grace of God we have been able to make some progress together as a football club. “When I started this, the vision was initially to try to help most of these young talents go abroad but I said to myself that there was a need to test ourselves among the very best and that was what prompted us to part of the league this year. “Now, having come out here to play against other opponents and assess the level of the competition, I can tell you that the league is a very tough and competitive one and it won’t be a walk in the park for my boys. “But I believe that they are capable of winning the league. I am proud of them and confident that they will make us proud. “We are also ready and have the capacity to represent FCT in the Division 4 playoff next year,” he said. NAN also reports that Thrift Echos FC have so far recorded one win and a draw from two games played in Group B. They defeated Winco Foam FC 4-2 in their first group game which produced the first hat trick of the competition through the boots of Nonso Nwoke on Monday and played out a goalless draw with Premier Academy at the end of a pulsating encounter on Thursday. They currently top Group B table with four points albeit with a superior goal difference over Fire Service FC and Premier Academy who sit in the second and third positions respectively also on four points. Winco Foam and Winners FC occupy the last two positions on the log. Two teams from each group will qualify for the Super League which will be made up of the two best clubs from the five groups and the best two losers, while other teams will be relegated to the Lower League. The Super League will consists of four groups of three teams each for the finals. The winner of the 2018 FCT League will represent the FCT in the Division 4 playoff next year. (NAN)
