The 21st edition of the FIFA World Cup kicked-off in Qatar on Sunday and it was a day to forget for the host as they were outplayed by Ecuador, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Ecuador scored twice to beat the host 2-0 in the 2022 FIFA World Cup opener.

After a colourful opening ceremony, the game finally kicked off with the South Americans dominating the game and pegging back Qatar.

Ecuador captain Enner Valencia proved too difficult to handle for the Qatari defenders and he had the ball in the net in the opening minutes but Video Assistant Referee ( VAR) ruled it out.

He finally scored a legitimate goal in the 16th minute from the penalty spot after he was brought down by a Qatari defender.

He completed his brace with the second goal in the 31st minute of the game and ensured that Ecuador went into the break with a comfortable lead.

The second stanza resumed with the host showing better performance and they were able to contain the rampaging Ecuador's forward line led by Valencia and made sure that they kept a respectable 2-0 scoreline.

Qatar will face Senegal and Netherlands in the second and last group matches.
