2023 AFCON Fallout: Egypt FA Sacks Head Coach

By Sampson Adedeji

The Egyptian Football Association has officially severed ties with their first-team coach, Rui Vitoria, following the team’s elimination from the 2023 African Cup of Nations, BSNSports.com.ng reports

The decision was solidified after a meeting among the association’s board of directors on Sunday, marking the conclusion of Vitoria’s tenure due to the team’s failure to reach the tournament’s quarterfinals.

The critical moment leading to this decision occurred during the team’s exit from the African Cup of Nations last week

In a tense match against DR Congo at the Stade Laurent Pokou in San Pedro, the Egyptian national team bid farewell in a penalty shootout that concluded 8-7 after a 1-1 draw in regular and extra time.

The disappointment of falling short in the tournament proved pivotal in the association’s resolution to part ways with the Portuguese coach.

The collective decision reflects a commitment to chart a new course for the team under different coaching leadership.

Post the African Cup of Nations, the Egyptian Football Association has commenced the search for a new head coach to guide the national team in future endeavours.

Vitoria, who took charge in July 2022, replacing Ehab Galal, was under a four-year contract with an annual salary of USD 2.4 million.
