2023 Women's World Cup: England End Gallant Super Falcons' Quarterfinal Dream

England Three Linoess ended the hope of Nigeria's Super Falcons in the ongoing 2023 Women's World Cup via a penalty shoot-out, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The European champions started the game on the front foot but the backline of the Nigerian team led by Osinachi Ohale pegged back the duo of Daly and Russo.

Left-back Ashleigh Plumptre was the bright spot of the Nigeria side in the first half hitting the woodwork and also forcing the goalkeeper into numerous saves.

England got a penalty overruled by the VAR midway into the first half after Rasheedat Ajibade was adjudged to foul Daly.

Daly also forced Nigeria shot-stopper Chiamaka Nnadozie to many saves and Plumptre cleared the lines towards the tail end of the first half.

Michelle Alozie was all over the attackers of the English team in the second half cutting off all the supplies from the middle.

Her resilient display led to the sending of Lauren James and reduced the England side to 10 players.

The 9-time African champions improved toward the end of the second half and were as to push the game into the extra time.

Despite the press from the African side, England was able to maintain their shape and pushed the game into the penalty shootout.

England lost the first kick through Kloe but Desire Oparanozie failed to capitalise on it as she lost her kick too.

England scored their second kick while Alozie missed Nigeria's second kick to put England an advantage.

Ajibade and Christy Ucheibe beautifully scored their kicks but England was able to convert their kicks and won the game 4-2.
