Nigeria's Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre has said she never believed she would play at the FIFA World Cup, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The former Leicester City player switched allegiance to Nigeria in 2020 despite representing the junior England team in the past.

She played an active role in Super Falcon's qualifying for the 2023 Women's World Cup by helping them secure a semi-final ticket in the 2022 Women'African Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Plumptre made the statement while speaking to the German news outlet DW Sports.

"It feels very surreal," she says. “I never thought I would ever be in a position to go to a World Cup. I remember when we beat Cameroon at the WAFCON (in the quarterfinal) to qualify; it was just unbelievable", she said.

Plumptre has played in the Super Falcon's two games in Australia.
