2024 CHAN: CAF to Announce Qualifying Competition for Remaining Group C Slots
By Admin
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is set to reveal details of an additional qualifying competition to determine the final two teams in Group C of the upcoming tournament. The announcement follows the withdrawal of Libya and Tunisia, which left two vacant slots in the group.
Initially, 19 nations were slated to compete for a spot in the finals, but over 10 countries opted not to enter the qualifying process. Now, the focus shifts to a select group of nations—Algeria, Comoros, Gambia, Malawi, Egypt, South Africa, and Gabon—who will compete in a condensed qualification campaign. This competition will decide the occupants of the remaining positions, referred to as Qualifier 1 (Q1) and Qualifier 2 (Q2), in Group C.
Group C is already shaping up to be a fascinating mix of teams, featuring Uganda, Guinea, and Niger, alongside the two yet-to-be-decided qualifiers. Uganda, as one of the tournament’s co-hosts alongside Kenya and Tanzania, holds the seeded spot in the group.
Uganda: Entering as co-hosts, Uganda secured their spot with a confident 2-0 aggregate victory over Burundi. Their home advantage and strong squad make them favorites to progress from the group.
Niger: Known for their defensive resilience, Niger qualified after an intense penalty shootout against Togo. Their ability to remain compact and difficult to break down will be a critical asset in the group.
Guinea: Guinea delivered a statement of intent with a dominant 6-2 aggregate victory over Guinea-Bissau in their qualifiers. Their attacking prowess makes them a formidable opponent for any team.
With the tournament set to kick off in August, the addition of Q1 and Q2 is expected to further intensify competition in Group C. The forthcoming qualifiers promise to bring high-stakes drama as teams battle for the last two tickets to the prestigious event.
CAF’s announcement is eagerly awaited, as it will not only set the stage for the final round of qualifiers but also provide clarity on the path to the finals for the remaining hopeful nations.
