Despite the exit of Nigeria's U-17 women’s team at the quarter-finals, they were honoured with the FIFA Fair Play Trophy at the 2024 U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic.
According to FIFA, this award recognizes the team that exemplifies exceptional sportsmanship and respect both on and off the field throughout the tournament.
Nigeria’s run for the title ended with a 2-0 defeat to the USA on October 26. However, their dedication to fair play and strong competitive spirit earned them high praise, underscoring their commitment to the values of the sport.
The team had an impressive start during the group stage, beginning with a commanding 4-1 win over New Zealand, followed by a solid 4-0 victory against Ecuador. In their final group match, they secured a 1-0 win over host nation the Dominican Republic, advancing to the knockout rounds unbeaten.
The tournament wrapped up on Sunday, with Korea DPR claiming the title by defeating Spain 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out after a 1-1 draw.
Though Nigeria’s U-17 team did not take the championship, their exemplary conduct and commitment to fair play remain a commendable achievement.
