Algeria forward and captain Riyad Mahrez has admitted that the current Nigeria Super Eagles squad is stronger than the team they faced at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Mahrez made the admission during a press conference ahead of Algeria’s clash with Nigeria at the ongoing 2025 AFCON, describing the Super Eagles as a more dangerous side going forward compared to six years ago.

“The current Nigeria team is better offensively than the one in 2019. There are a lot of good players in this team,” Mahrez said.

The former Manchester City winger, however, expressed confidence in the quality of the Algerian squad and promised a competitive contest between both sides.

“We also have a very good team, and we will give our best to make our supporters happy. It will be a super match,” he added.

Mahrez will be hoping to repeat his heroics from the 2019 tournament in Egypt, where he scored a dramatic late free-kick against Nigeria in the semi-final to send Algeria into the final.

The Desert Foxes went on to lift the trophy after defeating Senegal in the final. Nigeria and Algeria are set to renew their rivalry in what promises to be one of the standout fixtures of the 2025 AFCON.
