2025 World Athletics Championship: Enekwechi Zooms Into Final

Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has booked his place in the men’s Shot Put final at the ongoing 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, after an impressive display in the qualification round on Saturday, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The national record-holder produced a best throw of 20.83m in the opening session, which was good enough to place him 5th in Group A and 7th overall among all competitors.

The mark comfortably surpassed the cutoff distance needed to reach the medal round.

Enekwechi, who won silver for Nigeria at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, showed composure throughout his series, opening with 20.65m before improving to 20.83m on his second attempt. 

His third throw was a safety effort as qualification was already assured.

The 31-year-old, competing in his fourth World Championships, will now aim to become the first Nigerian to win a medal in the men’s Shot Put at this level.

He faces a strong field that includes Olympic champion Ryan Crouser of the United States, New Zealand’s Tom Walsh, and Italy’s Zane Weir.

The men’s Shot Put final is scheduled for Sunday evening at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium, and Nigerian fans will be hoping Enekwechi can deliver another historic performance on the global stage.
