2026 W/Cup Qualifier: Broos Complain Bitterly About Poor Bloemfontein Pitch Ahead Of Super Eagles Clash

South Africa’s head coach, Hugo Broos, has voiced his dissatisfaction with the condition of the Free State Stadium pitch in Bloemfontein, just days before Bafana Bafana face Nigeria in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Broos, who has been working with his team in preparation for the highly anticipated clash, expressed frustration over the poor state of the playing surface, describing it as “far from ideal” for an international fixture of such magnitude.

“The pitch is not good, and this is disappointing for a game of this level,” Broos said after inspecting the ground.

“We are preparing for one of the biggest matches of the qualifiers against Nigeria, and players deserve a proper surface to express themselves. Unfortunately, this is not what we have here", he told iol.

The Belgian tactician noted that a bad pitch could affect the technical quality of the game and increase the risk of injuries to players.

He stressed that both teams, including the visitors Nigeria, would be at a disadvantage if nothing is done quickly to improve the situation before matchday.

Bafana Bafana are set to host the Super Eagles in what promises to be a decisive fixture, with both sides battling for supremacy in Group C of the qualifiers.

Broos maintained that while his players are mentally ready for the contest, the state of the pitch remains a serious concern.

“Players like Percy Tau, Lyle Foster, and others need good conditions to perform at their best. The same applies to Nigeria, who have top-quality players. A poor pitch could kill the rhythm of the game,” Broos added.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) is reportedly in contact with stadium authorities to ensure urgent remedial work is carried out before kickoff.

However, there are fears that the short turnaround time may not allow for significant improvements.

The encounter between Bafana Bafana and the Super Eagles is scheduled to take place later this week in Bloemfontein, with both teams eyeing a crucial three points in their quest for World Cup qualification.
