2026 World Cup: Didier Drogba Calls for Immediate Action Over Challenges Facing African Teams
By Niyi Busari
Former Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba has expressed concern over what he describes as a growing pattern of challenges disproportionately affecting African teams and supporters ahead of major international competitions, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The Chelsea legend said recent developments involving African nations raise questions about fairness and equal treatment, warning that the situation could have a significant impact on teams' preparations and performances.
Drogba pointed to reports suggesting that Ghana could be without key midfielder Thomas Partey for an important fixture due to circumstances unrelated to the competition itself. According to the former striker, such issues represent a major setback not only for the team but also for the nation it represents.
He also highlighted reports of visa difficulties affecting Senegalese supporters, arguing that fans play a vital role in the atmosphere and spirit of international football.
"Imagine playing one of the biggest matches of your life without the support of your fans in the stadium," Drogba said.
The two-time African Footballer of the Year stressed that football is about more than what happens on the pitch, noting that supporters are an essential part of the spectacle, contributing to the competition, atmosphere and sense of national pride that define major tournaments.
Drogba called for authorities to review the situation and implement necessary adjustments, insisting that immediate action is required to ensure fairness for all participating nations.
"Something has to be done and adjusted immediately because, from where I'm standing, it feels like African teams and African supporters are the ones being affected the most," he said.
His comments add to the growing debate surrounding the treatment of African teams and fans, with many calling for measures that guarantee equal access, representation and support at major international events.
