2026 World Cup: Van der Vaart Sparks Controversy Over Morocco Remarks

Former Netherlands international Rafael van der Vaart has stirred controversy ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after making remarks about Morocco’s national team, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Speaking in a recent interview, the ex-midfielder claimed that players who are not good enough to represent the Netherlands often end up playing for Morocco national football team.

Van der Vaart made the comments while discussing a potential clash between the Netherlands and Morocco in the knockout stages of the tournament. 

He urged his country not to be overly concerned about the North African side.

“Not to be rude, but every Moroccan that’s not good enough to play for the Netherlands is now playing for Morocco, while we have players from Liverpool, Barcelona, etc. So let’s not worry about Morocco, really,” he said.

His statement has since generated mixed reactions among football fans, with many criticizing the comments as dismissive, especially considering Morocco’s impressive performances in recent international competitions.

The Atlas Lions made history at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, becoming the first African nation to reach the semi-finals, a feat that earned them global recognition.

With the expanded format of the 2026 tournament, both teams could potentially meet in the knockout rounds, setting the stage for a highly anticipated encounter.
