Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams has backed Nigeria to stop Benin Republic’s impressive run in the final round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, expressing confidence that the Cheetahs will not get a positive result in Uyo, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

South Africa’s qualification hopes suffered a blow on Friday after a frustrating 0-0 draw with Zimbabwe, a result that allowed Benin to move top of Group C with 17 points—two ahead of Bafana, who sit on 15.

Despite their destiny no longer being fully in their hands, Williams remains upbeat and believes fate may yet favour his side.

“I still feel everything is working in our favour. I believe in fairytales,” the Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper said.

“If I remember well, 12 years ago, we had our calculators out in Mbombela, where we’re going again, and maybe this time we’ll correct the wrongs from that campaign.”

The South African skipper is particularly confident about the clash between Nigeria and Benin, insisting the Super Eagles will come through for Bafana.

“Now it’s for Nigeria to play Benin, and I don’t see Benin getting a result in Nigeria. We just need to make sure we get our job done as well,” he stated.

Williams also emphasized the importance of their upcoming match against Rwanda the only side to have beaten South Africa in the qualifiers.

“We know how big that game against Rwanda is going to be. We’ve got a score to settle. They’re the only team that beat us, so there’s a lot of motivation going into it,” he concluded.
