2026 World Cup Qualifier: Rohr Questions FIFA's Delay Over South Africa’s Use Of Ineligible Player

Cheetahs of Benin head coach, Gernot Rohr, has voiced his frustration over FIFA’s prolonged delay in making a decision regarding South Africa’s alleged use of an ineligible player during their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The controversy surrounds Bafana Bafana midfielder Teboho Mokoena, who featured in their match against Lesotho despite reportedly being suspended due to an accumulation of yellow cards from previous games.

Despite widespread attention and intense debate across the continent and beyond, FIFA is yet to make a definitive ruling on the case.

Speaking with UK-based Nigerian journalist Osasu, the former Super Eagles coach expressed his disappointment over the lack of urgency from football's global governing body.

“I’m calling on FIFA to clarify the points situation in our World Cup qualifying group. Bafana Bafana used an ineligible player, and according to the rules, they should forfeit three points and three goals to Lesotho,” Rohr said.

“With the next round of qualifiers approaching, it’s essential — in the interest of fair play — that all teams know exactly where they stand. I’m genuinely surprised FIFA is taking so long to address what appears to be a straightforward matter. It must be resolved without any further delay.”
