Speaking with BSN Sports on the tournament, Sheba Jefferson an international volleyball referee said; "the 2023 Abuja Invitational Volleyball Challenge commences today. We have 50 teams participating in the tourney; 25 female and 25 men's teams. It's a massive competition because it is a grassroots competition that has the highest number of participating teams. This tournament is not meant for League players with the aim of producing new players for the clubs and national teams and also to motivate them to reach there peak.
"The championship is one of the programmes of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation, this means talented players that will be discovered on this tourney will be invited to the national team
"I won't pronounce the amount of prize money but I can assure you that they're going home with something tangible. Each team registered 10 player with two officials.
37 games will be played today in the female and male categories. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday are scheduled for preliminary rounds and by Wednesday the knock out stages will kick off at the Indoor Hall while the final holds on Thursday.
