AFCON 1976 Final: Guinea Denies Legal Action, Insists Morocco Won Fairly

The Guinean Football Federation (FGF) has dismissed reports suggesting it has taken legal action over the outcome of the 1976 Africa Cup of Nations, BSNSports.com.ng reports 

In an official statement, the federation clarified that it has not initiated any proceedings with either the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) or the Confederation of African Football (CAF). 

It stressed that recent claims falsely indicated Guinea was challenging the result of its match against Morocco.

The FGF revisited the historical context of the encounter, played on March 14, 1976, in Addis Ababa. 

During the game, Chérif Souleymane gave Guinea the lead before Ahmed Makrouh restored parity for Morocco.

The federation further explained that the tournament format at the time did not include a conventional final. Instead, the winner was determined via a final group stage, which Morocco topped to emerge champions.

Guinea’s football body emphasized the importance of preserving accurate sporting history and urged media outlets to rely on verified information, warning against interpretations that could create confusion.

The clarification comes amid ongoing controversy surrounding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where Senegal’s on-field victory was later overturned, with Morocco officially declared champions by CAF’s disciplinary bodies. 

The dispute between the two nations has since been taken to CAS in Switzerland.
