AFCON 2023: Super Eagles In Pot 1 As The Draw For The Qualifiers Gets Closer
By Oluwayemi Omolagba
The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been placed in pot One ahead of Friday's draw for the 2023 AFCON qualifiers series, BSNSports.com.ng can report.
After failing to make it to Qatar 2022, the senior male national team will have a lot to do if they are to redeem their image and that includes winning the AFCON in 2023 but first will have to qualify for the event, and as one of the top ranked teams on the continent, they should have a relatively easy landing.
Alongside eleven other teams, Super Eagles have been placed in pot One going into the draw meaning they will avoid playing any of the top 12 teams in Africa during the qualifying series.
Senegal, Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, Cameroon, Algeria, Mali, Cote d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Ghana and DR Congo are other teams in pot One while South Africa, Cape Verde are some of the strongest teams in pot 2.
The forty-eight teams in total set to partake in the qualifying series will be drawn into 12 groups of four teams (from Group A to Group L). The groups will consist of the 42 teams which enter directly, in addition to the six winners of the preliminary round.
The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations hosts, Ivory Coast, will participate in the qualifiers with the team guaranteed a spot in the finals regardless of its ranking in the group.
The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations is expected to kick-off from June 23 to July 23.
