AFCON 2023 Drama: CAS Fines CAF, Vindicates Algerian Coach

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has ruled in favour of former Tanzania head coach Adel Amrouche, vindicating him over his allegations against Morocco’s Football Federation (FRMF) during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Amrouche, an Algerian tactician, sparked controversy during a televised interview when he accused the FRMF of manipulating African football.

"Currently, the FRMF is a confirmed power in African football. In our last match against Morocco, they forced us to play in the evening when we had requested an afternoon kickoff," Amrouche stated in an interview with an Algerian TV channel.

He further alleged that Morocco "manages and determines everything in African football." Following these comments, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) banned Amrouche for bringing the game into disrepute.

However, CAS has now overturned that decision and ordered CAF to pay $3,336.45 in compensation to the former Tanzania coach.

The ruling adds a new layer to the ongoing controversies surrounding the 2023 AFCON while raising concerns about external influence in African football.
