AFCON 2025: "We Are Not Favoured By The Referees" – Moroccan Coach Fires Back

Morocco head coach Walid Regragui has dismissed claims that the Atlas Lions are benefitting from favourable officiating at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, insisting his side’s success has been earned on merit, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The host nation has been under intense scrutiny since the start of the tournament, with sections of fans and pundits questioning several refereeing decisions that appeared to go in Morocco’s favour. 

The debate intensified following Friday’s 2-0 quarter-final victory over Cameroon, a match that again generated controversy over officiating calls.

Reacting to the criticism, Regragui strongly defended his team and the legitimacy of their performances.

“We deserved our win. When you want to kill your dog, you accuse it of rabies,” the Moroccan tactician said.

He further rejected suggestions that Cameroon were unfairly treated by match officials.

“Cameroon didn’t score a goal and the referee denied it".

" People want to make it seem like we’re favoured by the referees. We win our matches on the field,” Regragui added.

Morocco’s progress at AFCON 2025 has continued to excite home supporters, but the Atlas Lions’ journey has also remained a major talking point beyond the pitch.

 As the tournament enters its decisive stages, Regragui and his players will be aiming to keep their focus on results while shutting out the growing noise surrounding officiating decisions.
