Super Eagles forward Akor Adams has explained the meaning behind his much-talked-about celebration during Nigeria’s clash against Algeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Sevilla attacker scored Nigeria’s second goal against the Desert Foxes in the encounter and followed it with a distinctive celebration that quickly drew attention across social media and among fans.

Speaking after the match, Adams revealed that the celebration was deliberate and carried a deeper message beyond football.

“My celebration in the previous game was intentional, you don’t kick someone when they’re down,” Adams said. “It was a tribute to Congolese fan Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, known as ‘Lumumba’.”

The Super Eagles forward explained that the gesture was meant as a sign of respect and solidarity, underlining the values of empathy and humanity even in the heat of competition.

Adams’ goal proved crucial as Nigeria maintained their strong run at the tournament, while his explanation has since earned praise from supporters who commended the striker for using the AFCON stage to pass a powerful message.
