AFCON 2025: Chelle Targets Victory Over Mozambique

Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has reiterated Nigeria’s determination to secure victory against Mozambique when both sides clash in the Round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Monday, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Nigeria, three-time AFCON champions, are one of only two teams to record a perfect group-stage run at the tournament, winning all three matches. 

Chelle is keen for his side to sustain that momentum as the competition enters the knockout phase.

Addressing journalists during his pre-match press conference, the Malian tactician stressed that the team’s immediate focus is solely on overcoming Mozambique and booking a place in the quarter-finals.

“Our objective is to win the next game. If God gives us the opportunity to reach the quarter-finals, then we will think about that,” Chelle said. 

“For now, our attention is on Mozambique, and we are determined to win. Yes, there is pressure, but that is part of the job.”

Chelle also reflected on the lessons drawn from his painful experience at the 2023 AFCON, where he led Mali before their dramatic quarter-final exit to hosts Côte d’Ivoire, despite the Ivorians playing most of the match with ten men.

“Since this AFCON began, I’ve tried to be more focused, more calm and more analytical during and after games,” he explained.

 “I make an effort to block out distractions around the team and myself. That is part of my philosophy and my project. These are lessons I’ve learned.”

The Super Eagles coach acknowledged that past experiences may not necessarily guarantee success, but insisted preparedness and mental strength will be decisive.

“There will be two teams on the pitch. What matters is whether my team will be ready for the fight. Our focus is entirely on Mozambique,” he added.

Nigeria will be eager to avoid a repeat of the 2021 AFCON scenario, where they also won all three group matches but suffered a shock Round of 16 elimination to Tunisia. 

This time, the Super Eagles are determined to ensure their strong start translates into a deep run in the tournament.
