AFCON 2025: FIFA Reverses Decision, Clubs Can Hold On To Players Until December 15

World football governing body FIFA has reversed its earlier directive on when European clubs must release players for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
FIFA initially announced last week that clubs were expected to release players heading to AFCON on or before December 8, in line with tournament preparation schedules.
However, following intense pressure and complaints from several European clubs over fixture congestion and player availability, the decision was reviewed.
In a new communication issued on Monday, FIFA confirmed that clubs will now be permitted to retain their African players until December 15, giving teams an additional week before releasing their internationals.
The adjustment means that many stars will be available to feature in important domestic and continental fixtures before joining their national teams for pre-tournament camping.
The 2025 AFCON is scheduled to kick off later in December in Morocco.
