AFCON 2025: Mahrez Shoots Algeria Into Round Of 16

Riyad Mahrez was once again the hero on Sunday evening as his solitary goal powered Algeria to a narrow 1-0 victory over Burkina Faso at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The former Manchester City winger scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot in the first half, calmly converting after Algeria were awarded a spot-kick. 

The strike was Mahrez’s third goal of the tournament, having netted twice in Algeria’s emphatic 3-0 opening win against Sudan.

Burkina Faso pushed for an equaliser in the second half but were met by a disciplined Algerian defence that held firm until the final whistle.

The win sealed Algeria’s qualification for the round of 16, making them the third team to book a place in the knockout stage alongside Nigeria and Egypt.
