AFCON 2025: Meet Uganda Goalscorer Who Is A Prison Warder

Uganda Cranes forward Denis Omedi has captured attention at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after scoring on his tournament debut despite an unconventional career path, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Omedi, 31, found the back of the net for Uganda in their Group encounter against Tunisia, although the Cranes eventually fell to a 3–1 defeat.

His goal, however, stood out as a personal milestone and a moment of pride for the East African nation. Back in 2019, Omedi was a part-time footballer while pursuing a diploma in nursing, balancing his studies with his passion for the game.

His journey took another turn when he later joined the Uganda Prisons Service, where he works as a prison warder while continuing his football career.

Six years on, Omedi’s perseverance and commitment have paid off, earning him a place in Uganda’s AFCON 2025 squad and the opportunity to announce himself on the continental stage.

His story has been widely praised as an example of resilience and dedication, underlining that success at the highest level of African football can emerge from the most unlikely backgrounds.
