Moroccan fans have been sanctioned following an incident during the losers’ final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where sections of the home crowd booed the Egyptian national anthem ahead of Egypt’s clash with Nigeria.
The incident occurred during the pre-match formalities, drawing immediate condemnation from officials and observers for breaching CAF’s regulations on sportsmanship and respect for national symbols.
Following a review, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) ruled that the conduct constituted inappropriate spectator behavior.
As a result, the Moroccan Football Federation has been fined 5,000 Swiss francs and issued a formal warning.
CAF reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on actions that undermine the values of respect and unity the tournament seeks to promote, emphasizing that similar incidents in the future could attract stiffer sanctions.
The match itself proceeded without further disruptions, as Nigeria and Egypt competed for third place at the tournament in Morocco.
