AFCON 2025: Nigeria Targets Fourth Title As Super Eagles Open Camp On December 10
By BSN Sports
The Nigerian national team will commence preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a training camp scheduled to open on December 10 in Morocco, the host nation, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The Super Eagles, runners-up at the 2023 tournament in Côte d’Ivoire, have been drawn in Group D, where they will face Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania as they begin their quest for a fourth continental title.
Nigeria's campaign kicks off on December 23 against Tanzania in Fez, a key fixture that could set the tone for their tournament. The host nation Morocco will open the competition against Comoros on December 21, launching a highly anticipated edition of the expanded AFCON.
Preparatory Friendlies Against South American Opponents
In a bid to fine-tune the squad ahead of the competition, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has arranged two high-profile international friendlies:
November 14 vs Venezuela at Shell Energy Stadium in Houston, Texas (2:00 a.m. Nigerian time)
November 18 vs Colombia at Citi Field Stadium, New York (1:00 a.m. Nigerian time)
The matches are part of a strategic effort to expose the team to diverse playing styles and increase match fitness before the AFCON opener.
AFCON Rescheduled to Accommodate Expanded FIFA Club World Cup
The 2025 AFCON will be held from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, a deviation from the traditional January–February window. The rescheduling was necessary due to FIFA’s expanded Club World Cup, now set to feature 32 teams and take place in June–July 2025.
Super Eagles Aim for Redemption and Glory
Despite recent setbacks, including a shaky start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, the Super Eagles remain one of the tournament favorites, thanks to a deep pool of talent and their performance in the last AFCON.
Nigeria last won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2013, and head coach Eric Chelle will be under pressure to deliver a strong tournament run to meet the expectations of fans and the federation.
