With just a few weeks to the kickoff of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, tragedy has struck at one of the host venues, leaving the Local Organizing Committee in mourning, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

A young cleaning worker reportedly lost his life at the Ibn Batouta Stadium in Tangier after falling from a significant height while carrying out routine cleaning duties on the stadium’s outer glass façade.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred early Wednesday morning when the worker slipped from the scaffolding despite wearing a safety harness.

Medical personnel rushed to the scene, but the victim was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the hospital.

Authorities have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident, with preliminary reports suggesting possible equipment failure or inadequate safety measures.

The tragic incident has cast a shadow over Morocco’s preparations for the continental showpiece, which is scheduled to begin in early 2025.

In a brief statement, the Local Organizing Committee expressed deep sorrow over the loss and extended condolences to the worker’s family, promising full support and a thorough inquiry.

“We are heartbroken by this tragic loss. Safety remains our utmost priority, and we will ensure that such an incident never happens again,” the statement read.

The Ibn Batouta Stadium, one of Morocco’s premier sporting facilities, is slated to host several key matches during the tournament.
