Nigeria’s national handball team has been handed a difficult challenge following the official draws for the 27th Africa Handball Cup of Nations (AFCON) scheduled for Kigali, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The draw ceremony, which took place on Friday evening in the Rwandan capital, placed Nigeria in Group A alongside northern powerhouse Algeria, Zambia and host nation Rwanda.

With 16 teams vying for the continental crown, the tournament is set to run from January 21 to 31, 2026. The top teams from each group will progress to the knockout phase as the battle for continental supremacy intensifies.

Nigeria, who will hope to surpass their previous performance, faces a tough task against an experienced Algerian side, an improving Zambian team and the motivated hosts buoyed by home support.

The competition also serves as a major qualifying pathway for global championships, making every match crucial.

The team is expected to begin preparations immediately ahead of the tournament.
