AFCON 2027 In Jeopardy As Uganda Stadium Declared Unfit

Preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations have suffered a significant setback after the newly constructed Hoima Stadium in Uganda was declared unfit to host matches, raising fresh concerns over the country’s readiness for the continental showpiece, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The development comes as a major blow to Uganda’s infrastructure plans, with the stadium initially earmarked as one of the key venues for the tournament. 

Despite substantial investments in upgrading sporting facilities, authorities have now been told that the venue falls short of required standards.

Sources indicate that critical areas of the stadium will require extensive renovations before it can meet the Confederation of African Football’s hosting requirements. 

The deficiencies are believed to span across pitch quality, safety compliance, and essential matchday facilities.

The situation has cast doubt over Uganda’s ability to deliver on its hosting responsibilities, especially with timelines tightening ahead of the 2027 tournament. It also raises broader concerns about infrastructure readiness among co-hosting nations.

Uganda is expected to host the tournament alongside Kenya and Tanzania, in what is projected to be a historic edition of the competition across East Africa. 

However, this latest development may force a reassessment of venue allocations if urgent corrective measures are not implemented.

Officials are yet to release a comprehensive statement on the next line of action, but pressure is mounting to fast-track renovations and ensure compliance with continental standards to avoid further complications.
