The Gambia will return to playing international football on home soil after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) approved the Independence Stadium in Bakau to host the country’s opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Somalia, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The approval ends a prolonged period in which the Scorpions were forced to play their home matches away from The Gambia due to concerns surrounding the condition and suitability of their home venue.
The Gambia Football Federation expressed delight over CAF’s decision, describing the return to the Independence Stadium as a special moment for Gambian football.
“I was very pleased to be able to inform all our players and staff this weekend of CAF's confirmation that our AFCON 2027 MD1 fixture versus Somalia will be hosted at the Independence Stadium in The Gambia,” the federation stated.
“Everyone is very excited about the prospect of playing at home after such a long journey on the road. I know that when the national anthem is played before kick-off it will be a special moment for all connected to Gambian football.”
The Scorpions are expected to relish the opportunity to play in front of their home supporters as they begin their campaign for a place at the 2027 AFCON finals.
The return to the Independence Stadium is also expected to boost the atmosphere around the national team, with Gambian football stakeholders and supporters looking forward to welcoming the team back home.
“After a long journey on the road, we are coming home,” the Gambia Football Federation said.
“A special moment awaits. Now let’s make home feel like home.”
The development marks an important moment for Gambian football as the Scorpions prepare to begin their quest for another appearance at the continental showpiece.
