AFCON Final: Senegal Rejects CAF Ruling, Takes Case To CAS

Senegal’s football authorities have formally rejected a recent decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), describing it as “unfair, unprecedented and unacceptable,” and warning that it risks damaging the credibility of African football governance, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

In an official response issued shortly after the ruling, Senegal confirmed it will escalate the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), the highest legal authority in global sport. According to Senegalese officials, all available appeal mechanisms within CAF have already been exhausted.

The dispute stems from a controversial decision by CAF’s Appeals Committee, which concluded that Senegal had effectively abandoned the match in question. This interpretation has been strongly contested by Senegal, which maintains that play resumed and continued within the remaining regulation time.

Observers noted that the interruption lasted less than the 15 minutes of regulation time required to complete the match, and that additional time—including extra time—was reportedly played, further complicating CAF’s conclusion.

The case now appears set to move into international arbitration, where CAS will be asked to review both procedural conduct and the interpretation of match events. Sports law experts say the outcome could set an important precedent for how match interruptions and abandonment rulings are handled in African competitions.

This development comes amid broader scrutiny of refereeing standards, match management, and governance structures within African football, with stakeholders increasingly calling for greater transparency and consistency in decision-making.
