AFCON Semi-Final: How the Super Eagles Rated In Loss to Morocco

Nigeria’s quest for a place in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations ended in disappointment on Wednesday night after a 4–2 defeat to hosts Morocco in a penalty shootout, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The semi-final encounter finished goalless after 120 minutes of intense football, with Morocco eventually holding their nerve from the spot to progress to the final.

The Super Eagles briefly took the upper hand during the shootout when goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali saved Morocco’s second penalty. However, Nigeria converted only two of their attempts, allowing the Atlas Lions to recover and clinch victory.

Morocco enjoyed the bulk of possession throughout the contest, asserting control from the first half as Nigeria adopted a compact and largely defensive approach in a bid to withstand sustained pressure.

With the win, Morocco set up a final showdown against Senegal, who edged Egypt 1–0 in the first semi-final earlier on Saturday. Nigeria will now face Egypt in the third-place playoff.

One of Nigeria’s most reliable defenders on the night, showing strength and composure at the back. Nigeria will miss him the Third Place game versus Egypt on Saturday after being banned due to accumulation of yellow cards.

Frank Onyeka – 5/10

Found it difficult to impose himself in midfield as Morocco dominated possession.

Bruno Onyemaechi – 7.5/10

One of his best performances of the tournament. Defended resolutely and supported the attack when opportunities arose.

Raphael Onyedika – 5/10

A below-par showing. Made several errors early on before gradually settling into the game.

Ademola Lookman – 5/10

An average outing. Struggled to influence the game as Nigeria spent much of the match chasing possession.

Alex Iwobi – 5.5/10

Closely marked throughout the match and unable to unlock the Moroccan defence with his passing.

Victor Osimhen – 6/10

Worked tirelessly up front but received limited service and was largely isolated.

Akor Adams – 5.5/10

Showed energy after coming on but failed to create a decisive moment.
