AFCON To Be Held Every Four Years After 2027

The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will adopt a new four-year cycle after the 2027 edition, Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe has confirmed, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Motsepe disclosed that following the joint-hosted AFCON 2027 in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania, the continent’s flagship football tournament will no longer follow its traditional two-year cycle.

 Instead, the competition will be staged every four years in line with major global tournaments.

Under the revised calendar, the next AFCON after 2027 will be held in 2028, with subsequent editions scheduled for 2032 and 2036.

The CAF President explained that the decision is aimed at easing congestion in the international football calendar and aligning African football more closely with global standards, while also allowing host nations and participating teams more time for preparation.

AFCON, Africa’s biggest football event, has historically been played every two years, a format that has often attracted criticism from European clubs due to fixture congestion. The shift to a four-year cycle is expected to reduce such concerns and enhance the overall quality and commercial value of the tournament.
