AFCON U20: Flying Eagles Restore Pride, Clinch Bronze Medal
Sampson Adedeji
Nigeria’s Flying Eagles concluded their 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations campaign on a positive note, securing a bronze medal with a dramatic victory over host nation Egypt, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Following a narrow 1-0 loss to South Africa in the semifinals, Nigeria faced Egypt who had fallen to Morocco—in the third-place playoff.
The match got off to a tense start as Egypt took the lead just two minutes in, with Hassan Osama striking early to give the home fans something to cheer about.
However, Nigeria responded shortly after the break. Capitalizing on a misplaced pass from Ahmed Khaled, Divine Oliseh fed Bidemi Amole on the right, who calmly slotted the ball past Egyptian goalkeeper Ahmed Wahba to level the score.
Egypt nearly snatched a late winner in stoppage time, but the match ultimately went to penalties. In the shootout, the Flying Eagles were clinical, triumphing 4-1 to claim the bronze medal replicating their achievement from the previous edition of the tournament.
