Reigning African champions Cote d’Ivoire have suffered a major setback ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations following the withdrawal of star striker Sébastien Haller due to injury, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Haller, who played a decisive role in the Elephants’ triumph at the last edition of the tournament, has been ruled out after failing to recover in time for the competition in Morocco.

In response, the Ivorian Football Federation has called up Evann Guessand as a replacement. The recall represents a significant milestone for Guessand, who now has an opportunity to feature on the continent’s biggest stage as Cote d’Ivoire adjust their plans ahead of the tournament.

Haller’s absence will be keenly felt, especially considering his heroics in the previous AFCON final where he scored twice against Nigeria to secure the title for the Elephants.

With the tournament fast approaching, head coach Emerse Faé will now be tasked with reshaping his attacking options as Cote d’Ivoire seek to defend their continental crown without their talismanic striker.
